Hadrians Wall

May 2003 will see the official opening of the
Hadrian's Wall Path National Trail.
From early June, Wycheway Country Walks will be
arranging self-guided holidays along the new route
as well as our existing holiday from Heddon to
Carlisle. We are also arranging a one week guided
holiday in August.

Hadrian's Wall, built by order of the Emperor
Hadrian in AD122, is the most important Roman
monument in Britain. Because of its importance it
was inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 1987.
Hadrian's Wall ranks as one of the great wonders of
the world. It took six years to build the wall which is
80 Roman miles in length, this is 73 modern miles or
117km.

Wycheway Country Walks have prepared a variety of walking
tours and short breaks to suit every taste. But this is more
than a walk; it is a journey back in time through spectacular
countryside exploring fine examples of the wall, forts, turrets,
museums and historic towns. Our tours are planned to allow
time to visit these important sites and museums.
Hadrian's Wall Path starts at Wallsend by the Segedunum Fort
Heading west, the route takes us to Heddon-on-the-Wall and
Chollerford and the nearby cavalry fort and museum at
Chesters.. The next 25 miles of our journey, situated on the
northern fringe of the superb rugged landscape of the
Northumberland National Park, takes us to some of the finest
examples of the wall and its buildings. There, several
milecastles and turrets as well as impressive forts at
Housesteads and Vindolanda and the unique Birdoswald
(Banna Fort), where all the components of the Roman Frontier
system can be found together in a small area.
Beyond Birdoswold, and just off the route, is Lanercost Priory,
built with stone from the wall and well worth the slight detour.
The final stages of the walk continue to Carlisle and then
finally to Bowness on Solway.
