Hadrians Wall
|
|
Hadrian's Wall Path is more than a walk; it is a journey back in
time through spectacular countryside exploring fine examples of the
wall, forts, turrets, museums and historic towns. Hadrian's Wall is
a sophisticated piece of engineering and our itineraries have been
carefully prepared to allow you to spend time soaking up the atmosphere
created by these impressive ruins and to visit these important site
and museums. Hadrian's Wall, built by order of Emporer Hadrian in
AD122, is the most important Roman monument in Britain. Because of
its importance it was inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 1987.
Hadrian's Wall ranks as one of the great wonders of the world. It
took six years to build the wall which is 80 Roman miles in length,
this is 73 modern miles or 117Km. |

This is our 7th year of walking holidays along Hadrian's Wall and we have prepared a variety of walking tours and short breaks to suit every taste. You may choose to walk in either direction, walk the whole length of the path or just a short section. Hadrians's Wall Path starts at Wallsend by the Segedunum Fort Heading west; the route takes us to Heddon-on-the-Wall and Chollerford and the nearby cavalry fort and museum at Chesters. The next 25 miles of our journey, situated on the northern fringe of the superb rugged landscape of the Northumberland National Park, takes us to some of the finest examples of the wall and its buildings. There, several milecastles and turrets as well as impressive forts at Housesteads and Vindolanda and the unique Birdoswold (Banna Fort), where all the components of the Roman Frontier system can be found together in a small area. Beyond Birdoswold, and just off the route, is Lanercost Priory, built
with stone from the wall and well worth the slight detour. The final
stages of the walk continue to Carlisle and then finally to Bowness
and Solway. |
|
Our most popular itinerary for this self guided holiday allows 8 days to complete the walk. However, we do suggest that you allow an extra day to spend visiting some of the sites or museums. You may book as many days walking and accommodation as you want with a minimum of 2days/2nights. For further details, please request a copy of our Hadrian's Wall
information sheet. |
