Offa's Dyke Path & Pembrokeshire Coastal
Path Page
|
|
Offa's Dyke is an impressive
earthwork built by King Offa of Mercia during the eighth century to mark the border with Wales and to keep the marauding Welsh in the mountains to the west.
The path is 172 miles (275 km)
long and runs from Chepstow on the Severn Estuary to Prestatyn on the North Wales coast. |
|
The route passes through some of the best scenery in Britain, including the
Wye Valley, Black Mountains, Severn Valley and the Clwydian Hills, reaching over 2306 feet (703 metres) at the highest point. You will visit attractive and historic places - Monmouth with its wealth of interesting buildings, the pretty riverside town of Hay-on-Wye, the pleasant market towns of Kington and Knighton, castles at Montgomery, Welshpool and Chirk.
The path gives grand views of the surrounding varied and tranquil countryside.
At the north end of the route you walk across the magnificent Vale of Llangollen and the River Dee, and north to the seaside resort of Prestatyn. |

Offa's Dyke Path
|
|
The Pembrokeshire Coast Path
covers 186 miles of some of the most spectacular coastal scenery in Britain.
Much of the route is along the
cliff tops providing magnificent coastal views and off shore islands. There is a wealth of marine and bird life to be seen as well as a variety of wild flowers, at their best in springtime. The area is also rich in history and remains of iron age forts and standing stones are to be found.
Our journey starts in the north,
just outside Cardigan at Poppit Sands. |
|
Beyond the pretty harbour at Solva our journey
takes us around St Brides Bay passing many fine beaches and the villages of Newgale, Nolton Haven, Broad Haven, Little Haven, Marloes and Dale.
The character of the walk changes as the route
takes us through the deep water harbour of Milford Haven and then Pembroke Dock. We now continue to the seaside resorts of Tenby and Saundersfoot before completing the walk at Wisemans Bridge, Amroth. |
|
The first part of the walk passes some of the most
dramatic coastal scenery.
The route continues through Newport then rounds
Dinas Island before arriving at the old port of Fishguard. The path continues around Strumble Head towards St David's passing through the villages of Aber-mawr, Porthgain and Abereiddy.
As you swing round St David's Head the fine stretch
of beach at Whitesands Bay will be seen. Continuing round St David's Peninsula the old port for St David's, Port Clais, is reached. This is a good point to divert to the small city of St David's. |
